About Snetterton
Snetterton is a charming rural parish located in the Breckland District of Norfolk, approximately 9 miles from Thetford and 19 miles from Norwich. With a population of just over 200 residents, the parish enjoys a peaceful countryside setting and a strong sense of local identity.
Heritage and Community
The history of Snetterton dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as “Snentretuna,” meaning “Snytra’s enclosure” in Old English.
At the heart of the village is All Saints’ Church, a Grade I listed building dating from the 13th century. The parish retains its agricultural character, with scattered dwellings, open green space, and historical features contributing to its charm.
Snetterton Circuit
The parish is perhaps best known for Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit, one of the UK’s premier motorsport venues. Originally the site of RAF Snetterton Heath during the Second World War, the airfield was converted into a racetrack in 1953 and has since developed into a modern facility catering to both national and international events.
Operated by MotorSport Vision, the circuit features multiple layouts (including the 300, 200 and 100 circuits) and regularly hosts the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), British Superbikes, truck racing, and various historic and club racing events.
Recent Developments
Ongoing investment has seen recent improvements to the circuit infrastructure, including:
- Resurfacing key track areas during the winter of 2023–24
- Upgrades to safety features, paddock drainage, and key facilities such as the medical centre and control buildings
In late 2024, a planning application was submitted for the development of a four-storey hotel, research facilities, and a simulator training centre, signalling further economic and tourism potential for the area.
Living in Snetterton
Despite the presence of the circuit, Snetterton remains a quiet and close-knit parish, with a strong rural character and active parish governance. The Parish Council continues to represent residents’ interests and works to balance heritage, community needs, and local development.
